Instructions

    • 1

Prepare the surface on which you'll apply stucco. If you're adding stucco to a wall made of concrete, brick or block, apply a concrete bonding agent when putting the stucco on. If you're working with a wood wall, cover the wood with roofing felt and a hammer and nails. Then cover the felt with metal netting before applying the stucco.

Decide upon a color for your stucco. This is what people will see. Decide whether you want to color your stucco. If you do, add your dye and mix it up with the stucco until you're satisfied. Start with a little dye and add more as you go along, until you find the color you like.

Apply a layer of stucco a little less than a 1/2-inch thick to your wall with a trowel. Allow this layer to dry. After it has dried for about 40 hours, use your trowel to scratch the stucco slightly. This should be done no more than one-eighth of an inch deep. This is what provides the traditional stucco rough appearance. Spray this lightly with water every couple hours to create the best-possible appearance.

Apply the finish stucco coat with the trowel. Make this layer about a quarter-inch thick. Remember that you can make your stucco flat and even or you can add texture. Decide whether you want big or small swirls or an angular design. Be sure that your design fits in with the look of the rest of your home. If you have rounded windows, you may want to maintain that look in your stucco.

Spray this layer lightly with a hose for the next several days. Doing this ensures that you'll get years of enjoyment from improving the look of your home.
