How to Chip a Golf Ball a Precise Distance

There is nothing more frustrating than trying to chip a golf ball while playing a round and having it sail far beyond the green. Or even worse, chipping a golf ball that doesn't even travel a quarter of the distance you need it to. Well here are some tips on how to chip a golf ball a precise distance.

Instructions

    • 1

Look at the pin (or place you wish to chip the golf ball.) Divide the distance between yourself in the ball. An easy way to do this is imagining a football field. Segment the distance every ten yards.

    • 2

Select the appropriate wedge from your golf bag. (Sand Wedge and Pitching Wedge are the most common.)

    • 3

Align your shot by assuming your stance. As you assume your stance, use your visualization tools to determine how much strength it will take you to power the ball. Imagine each section of 10 yards.

    • 4

Adjust your swing according to the visualization technique. Many golfers cut down on their swing when they are chipping. Use either a half or three-quarter swing.

    • 5

Make contact with the ball and follow through. Many golfers have a tendency to stop their swing when chipping because they don't want to hit the ball too hard. By stopping the swing as soon as you make contact, you run the risk of hitting the golf ball askew because the club face was unnaturally stopped.

Tips & Warnings

  • Practice, practice, practice. Because everyone's swing is slightly different, the best remedy to chip a golf ball a precise distance is to hit the driving range with your clubs and systematically practice chipping various distances. Then, during game play, you'll know exactly which wedge to use and how hard to hit the ball. Remember to use the visualization technique.
