Middle school can be a challenging time in a student's life. Just as they may have ascended to the top of the heap at elementary school, they can find themselves at the bottom again socially at middle school. Add in more difficult classes and all kinds of new faces, and you have the potential for a lot of stress. Here's how you can weather the storms of middle school.

From Quick Guide: K-12 Basics
Difficulty: Moderate
Instructions
  1. Step 1

Remember that the older kids used to be just like you. Most older students will be happy to help a younger student find his way around the school. If someone is picking on you, make sure to tell a teacher or the principal.

  2. Step 2

Find the friends you're comfortable with, but don't rule out making new friends. Middle school is a great chance for you to meet people who can challenge you to grow in new ways. Choosing to be around positive people can help feel good about yourself.

  3. Step 3

Use healthy ways to deal with pressure. When faced with a stressful situation, take some time out before you make a split decision. Avoid risky behaviors such as drugs, alcohol and tobacco that can lead to problems down the road.

  4. Step 4

Figure out what you value, and stick to it. As you enter middle school, you may encounter more peer pressure than you dealt with in the past. Make sure you know where you stand.

  5. Step 5

Seek out adults you can trust. Don't rule out that your parents may be more help than you think. They were once teenagers too. Teachers, ministers and other family members can help you weather tough times.

  6. Step 6

Keep your sense of humor. When everything seems desperate, choose to find the funny side of life.
