A feature of Yahoo! Messenger called smart tags makes it easy to act on phone numbers and email addresses. When a phone number or email address shows up in a Yahoo! Messenger message you receive, the program underlines it and adds special functionality to the text.

Difficulty: Easy
Instructions
  1. Step 1

Left click on the Yahoo! Messenger smart tag. After you left click on the underlined smart tag a menu of options pops up. The options vary depending on whether you have clicked on an email address or a phone number.

  2. Step 2

Use the phone number smart tag menu to send a text message to a phone number. Left click on the phone number and choose the "SMS" option. Type your text message in the window that pops up and hit the "Send" button.

  3. Step 3

Call a phone number. If you have subscribed to the Yahoo! Messenger Phone Out service, a call option appears on the phone number smart tags menu. Selecting "Call" will initiate a phone call to the number using Yahoo! Messenger.

  4. Step 4

Send an email to an email address. Left click on an email address and choose the "Email" option. An email message in your default email program opens up with the address filled in on the "To" field.

  5. Step 5

Invite someone to join Yahoo! Messenger. Choose the "Invite to Join" option from the email smart tags menu to send an invitation to join Yahoo! Messenger to the person's email address.

  6. Step 6

Save an email address or phone number to your Yahoo! Messenger address book using smart tags. Choose the "Save to Address Book" option. Choose an existing contact from the window which pops up to save the email address or phone number to the contact's contact card. Choose the "New Contact" tab to use the information to start a new contact.
