1
Decide exactly how big the crack should be. You'll have to prepare differently depending on whether you're making a giant hole or a hairline fracture. Bear in mind, sometimes the smallest flaws can be the most shocking. After all, it drives people crazy to find even a tiny scratch on their car.

2
Obtain your materials. You may have sufficient things around the home like black plastic tape or glue. If you don't have these things, make a trip to a home repair or craft store. Depending on how extensive your fake crack will be, think about picking up different sizes of tape.

3
Pick the spot for your fake crack. It's a little obvious to put your fake wall flaw right in the middle of the most visible wall in the room. Think about an out-of-the-way corner.
-
4
Protect the wall. You don't want anything to go wrong. If you're faking an extensive crack, you might want to put a bit of plastic clingfilm over the painted drywall.
-
5
Glue on a small piece of very thin black plastic and smooth it to the wall. Press a small amount of black modeling clay against the wall.

6
Check the lighting. Perception is everything, so you should customize your fake crack, depending on where it is. If a lamp usually points right at the area, perhaps you should point the light away. If you've done a particularly good job, maybe you could shine a little more light on it.
