Things You'll Need:

  • Matches
  • Water
  • Pocketknife
  • Cord or rope
  • Fishhooks and line
  • Map
  • Compass
  1. Step 1

Carry some matches. The first thing you should have in your kit are matches. These can be used in many different ways to aid you in your survival. You can use them to build a fire for warmth or signaling for rescuers, or to create light and sterilize something if necessary.

  2. Step 2

Take some water with you. You can survive for a much longer period of time without food than you can without water. Always carry water in some way shape or form will allow you stay hydrated for an amount of time. Manufacturers are making water bottles that will purify water from lakes and streams, though solar exposure; use them.

  3. Step 3

Grab your pocketknife. This little tool will allow you to be able to assist you in making shelter and to create tinder to get a fire started if it is in your survival kit. In addition, you can use the blade of the knife as a signaling device is if it clean enough and has enough of a shine.

  4. Step 4

Bring a length of cord or rope. This tool can be used to provide shelter by tying wood together or can be used to create traps and snares for animals to be used as food. Take some fishhooks and some fishing line. These items can serve multiple purposes as they can be used to either fish if near water or if necessary to provide stitches on someone.

  5. Step 5

Pack a map and compass of the area you will be in as well as possibly a GPS to guide you where you will be going in the event you do get lost. Choose only items that you know will be of benefit and that you will have no problem carrying with you in your survival kit. You will not want to take items that you may view as useless and will leave behind. Remember you will water and shelter first.
