Step 1
Make sure that your engine is completely cool before working on it. This will minimize the risk of getting burned as well as allow you to remove parts without the risk of the engine being hot. Locate valve covers on the 5.3 liter engine. Disconnect the battery terminals.

Step 2
Disconnect all ignition coil wires, fuel injectors, evaporative emission canister and Purge Solenoid Hose (EVAP).

Step 3
Disconnect the mass air flow vent, engine coolant sensor and PCV valve hose.

Step 4
Remove the ignition coil bracket bolts and the ignitions coils.

Step 5
Remove the valve cover bolts, then remove the valve covers. Remove the old gasket and clean the covers. Replace the old gaskets with the new gaskets.

Step 6
Reverse the steps utilized to remove the gaskets. Replace the valve cover basket bolts. Tighten the bolts in sequence. Do not over tighten. Replace ignition coil bracket and bolts. Replace the plug wires, ignition coil plugs, PCV Valve hose and the engine coolant sensor, mass air flow, EVAP hose and wiring harness.

Step 7
Replace the battery terminal and add oil. Allow the Avalanche to run idle in neutral.
