When you feel the car handling rough and hear "thump, thump, thump," you can almost be certain that you have a flat tire. You now have two choices; you can patch the tire of the Ford Mustang or change the tire. If you have all the right equipment, like a plug kit and portable compressor, you can patch it without removing the tire. Otherwise, you need to change the tire.

Difficulty: Moderate
Instructions

Things You'll Need:

  • Jack, jack wrench and spare tire
  • Chalk
  • Pliers
  • Patch kit
  • Knife
  • Portable compressor
  1. Step 1

Locate the jack that's in the spare tire. Decide whether you want to change the tire or patch the tire of your Ford Mustang. If you patch the tire you may not need the jack if the hole is in the tread of the tire and easily accessible.

  2. Step 2

Jack the vehicle. Locate the jack notch next to the tire that you change. Lift it enough to rotate the tire when you patch the hole in the Mustang's tire. If you change the tire, loosen the wheel bolts first then jack it up far enough to remove the tire and put on the spare.

  3. Step 3

Remove the object that caused the flat if you see it. Mark the spot with chalk for easier location when you plug it.

  4. Step 4

Use the rasp, which is the round file you'll find in the tire kit, to ream out the hole in the tire. Push it in and pull it out twice.

  5. Step 5

Load the needle that comes with the kit. Put a tarry worm on the needle so that the needle is in the middle. Insert the loaded needle into the hole until there is only 1/2 inch of the worm showing. Pull the needle straight out.

  6. Step 6

Trim away any excess of the tarry worm that protrudes beyond the tire tread. Fill the tire with the portable air compressor.

  7. Step 7

Take off the tire and replace it with the spare if you choose to change it and patch the hole in the tire of your Mustang later. Lower the jack and put it and the tire in the trunk.

Tips & Warnings
  • Always park the car on level ground before you attempt to jack it. Apply the parking brakes and block the tire diagonal to the flat before you begin.
  • Never patch a hole in the sidewall, a gash or a blowout.
