How to Adjust the Clutch in a Mercury Cougar

The clutch of the Mercury Cougar is adjustable, and you can adjust it yourself. If you find that no amount of adjustment will change your clutch, it's time to look for other issues.

  • Check the level of the fluid in the reservoir of your Mercury Cougar if the clutch of your car is hydraulic. The simple act of refilling the reservoir and pumping the pedal can be all the clutch needs for adjustment. The clutch pedal should regain the engagement point you like.

  • Bleed the clutch system by opening the bleeder valve on the slave cylinder and inserting a hose. Put the other end of the hose in a clear container holding clutch fluid. Pump the pedal a few times until you don't see any air bubbles in the system. Replace any clutch fluid you may have lost.

  • Adjust the height of the Mercury Cougar's pedal by turning the knob at the top of the pedal. You have to be careful not to adjust it too high or too low as you do so; this could affect the free play of the pedal as well as lead to other problems if the pedal is adjust improperly.

  • Look at the disc and the pressure plate assembly. If you find that these are excessively worn, no amount of adjustment to your clutch will work. It's time to replace your Mercury Cougar's clutch.
