How to Adjust the Clutch in a Hyundai Sonata

It is possible to adjust the clutch on the Sonata, though first you need to determine whether it's a hydraulic clutch (self-adjusting) or done via a clutch cable. If you cannot fix the clutch by adjusting it, you may need to replace the clutch components.

Things You'll Need

  • Clutch fluid
  • Wrenches
  • Pliers
  • Measuring tape

Clutch Cable

  • Check near the transmission of the Hyundai Sonata for the clutch cable's adjuster nut if you car has a clutch cable.

  • Turn the adjuster nut to tighten it to adjust the clutch cable. If there is too much looseness in the cable, the clutch will not properly engage the transmission's "throw out bearing." By adjusting the clutch in this manner, you should improve the clutch's performance.

  • Test the clutch pedal of the Hyundai Sonata to see whether the adjustment you made works well. If not, turn the adjuster nut again.

Hydraulic Clutch

  • Check the reservoir of the Hyundai Sonata to see whether there is enough clutch fluid in the reservoir, which is located at the rear left of the engine bay. Fill the reservoir and pump the pedal several times to restore the pressure in the system.

  • Bleed the clutch system of fluid by releasing the slave cylinder's bleeder valve, inserting a hose and putting the other end of the hose into a clear container with clutch fluid. Pump the clutch pedal slowly, and continue doing so until you see no more air bubbles in the container. Replace the clutch fluid.

  • Examine the clutch pedal plates in the Hyundai Sonata. If the plates are worn, replace them.
