How to Read the Oil Dipstick in a Chevy Silverado
An engine needs oil to work properly, so it's critical to do regular check to make sure you have enough oil. If a "Check Eng Oil Level" light shows on your instrument panel, you need to check the engine oil level immediately. The Chevy Silverado uses marks on its dipstick to help owners check their oil levels with ease.

1
Park your Chevy Silverado on a level surface and wait a few minutes, but not too long. You want to avoid waiting too long after the engine is shut off because the oil needs to be warm for accurate readings, but you also want to give it enough time for the oil to drain into the oil pan after running.
-
2
Open your hood and look for the engine oil dipstick. It is on the passenger side of the engine compartment and has a yellow ring.

3
Loop your finger through the handle at the top and gently pull the Chevy Silverado dipstick out of its sheath. Use a lint-free rag or tissue to wipe it clean.
-
4
Notice the "X" marks on the dipstick. These mark the safety zone for the safe running of your engine.
-
5
Slip the dipstick back into the sheath and pull it out immediately to get a clear reading. Check the oil level on the dipstick without wiping it off.
-
6
Make sure the oil level mark is within the "X" range on the dipstick. If it is over the top of the "x" marks, you need to drain some oil out; if it is at or below the "X" marks, you need to add one quart of oil and re-check until the oil level lies between the "X" marks.
