How to make some really good biscuits

Difficulty: Moderately Easy
Instructions

Things You'll Need:

  • 1 1/2 cups all purpose flour
  • 1 1/2 teaspoons sugar
  • 1/2 teaspoon soda
  • 1/2 cup shortening
  • 1 1/2 teaspoon baking powder
  • 3/4 teaspoon salt
  • 2/3 cup buttermilk
  • 1 teaspoon melted butter or margarine
  1. Step 1
     

    Preheat Oven to 450F. Mix flour, sugar, baking powder, salt & soda.

  2. Step 2
     

    Cut in shortening until mixture resembles fine crumbs.

  3. Step 3
     

    Stir in milk until dough leaves side of bowl and rounds up into a ball.

  4. Step 4
     

    Turn onto lightly floured suface.

  5. Step 5
     

    Knead lightly until smooth (about 10 times).

  6. Step 6
     

    Roll or pat dough 3/4" thick and cut with cutter or mold into biscuit shape.

  7. Step 7
     

    Place 1" apart on cookie sheet for crusty crust.

  8. Step 8
     

    Brush tops with margarine.

  9. Step 9
     

    Bake 12 to 15 minutes.

Tips & Warnings
  • Milk can be substituted, if so omit soda.
