Introduce Your Child to their Pet

Children always remember their first pet; the one they helped to name and take care of. Children learn how love and responsibility go hand in hand. An animal can be a child’s best friend and/or their baby. They learn to see the world through eyes other than their own, and learn a great deal about nature in the process. Pets often teach children about the world of predator and prey (cats and birds, lizards and crickets, dogs and bunnies, etc.). Pets can teach children about commitment and empathy, by their complete dependence upon us for their comfort and survival.

Difficulty: Moderate
Instructions
  1. Step 1

SELECTION: First, discuss with your child the type of pet your family has chosen. Let him/her know that the responsibility is serious because the animal will be dependent on the family for its food supply, safety, and health.

  2. Step 2

RESEARCH: Next, research your pet of choice by searching online, going to the pet store, or by reading care guides in the library or book store. Encourage your child to list what will be needed in caring for their new animal. Example: Some reptiles need special lighting, and cages.
You may discover that snakes like to eat mice and you’d rather not travel that road. You may think you want a Siberian Husky, and discover that they shed mountains of fur and are difficult to train. Once you’ve thoroughly researched your pet of choice, and are comfortable with your decision, it is time to take the next step.

  3. Step 3

SUPPLIES: Next, when you have decided that you’ll be able to meet your new pet’s needs, it is time to go shopping (see link below). Prepare your pet’s home/habitat including food, water, and a place for privacy. Discuss the chores your child will be responsible for such as feeding their new pet or disposing of its waste (litter box, manure in the yard, or cleaning cage).

  4. Step 4

HOME LIFE: Now it is time to bring your pet home!!! Let your child know if you anticipate a traumatic car ride (cats will often meow incessantly). Sometimes it takes a few days before your pet is ready to socialize. Encourage your child to empathize with their new pet. Ask them what they think it would feel like to be in an unknown environment with strangers. Explain that your new pet will adapt to your family’s routine, but in the meantime, speak in soothing tones and treat them respectfully.
