How to Take Curves Faster and Safer

Race car drivers that want to win races need more than just a fast car and good tires.

Difficulty: Easy
Instructions
  1. Step 1

To get in and out of a curve quicker and safer, slow down before you get into the curve. If you want to see proof that this strategy works, watch a car race where there is a mixture of advanced drivers and amateurs. Typically the winners of car races slow down earlier in curves than do most of the drivers that never win. Why?

  2. Step 2

If you slow down early for a curve, you can accelerate earlier coming out of the curve. So what difference does that make?

  3. Step 3

The forward inertia of your vehicle wants to take your car off the track. If you can accelerate before peak inertia strikes, you can counter some of the forward inertia tendency.

  4. Step 4

Another advantage, of slowing down earlier in a curve, than many have a desire to do, is you don't have to slow down as much to take the curve, so you have less speed to regain.

Tips & Warnings
  • With a car loaded with passengers, you'll need to slow down even earlier for curves.
  • When the roads are wet slow down earlier for curves.
