This will get you through the job ahead, make sure to replace your O-Ring!

Difficulty: Moderately Challenging
Instructions

Things You'll Need:

  • A basic socket set and wrench and extension
  • A new Thermostat and O-ring
  1. Step 1

Refer to my poorly drawn images of the engine compartment of a 95 Ford Contour. Your Thermostat should be located to the left of your engine compartment, if your standing in front of it. Or you could also think of it as being on the front of the engine, since the motor is in there sideways.

The Housing that covers the Thermostat is given away because its bolt pattern is shaped like a triangle with a dome shape top and it will be connected to the upper Radiator Hose.

  2. Step 2

To keep this article short and concise, I will give you a list of the things that need to be removed in order to get the Thermostat out:
    -Disconnect the Negative Battery Cable
-Drain the Coolant out of your radiator
-Remove the Small Coolant Hose that leads to the Coolant Recovery Tank
-Remove the Upper Radiator Hose and then remove the Three retaining bolts on the thermostat housing
    *or*
-Remove the three bolts holding the Thermostat Housing onto the block

Once you have removed the Thermostat Housing, the Thermostat should be exposed. This is your chance!

Pull that sucker out! Just remember to get the o ring with it and to remember how it came out.

  3. Step 3

Once you have Pulled out the old thermostat, place the new one with its new O-ring into the engine block. Make sure you put it in the way the old one came out.

Replace the Thermostat Housing Bolts with the Thermostat in the Engine. This will make it easier. Than replace everything else in the reverse order that you removed them.

Tips & Warnings
  • Some Thermostat Housing have a thin gasket that will need to be replaced when you change your Thermostat. Make sure to check with your local autoparts stores and find out
  • Make sure to buy new coolant for your car, and to recycle the old coolant properly!
  • This is a good time to check your Radiator Hoses for cracks or tears!
  • Double check your Battery Cables and make sure they are tight!
  • Your coolant should be 50/50 with Water
  • Be prepared for some Coolant spillage. It happens! Even the ficklest person can spill, make sure you have some saw dust or cleaner around!
  • Always place old coolant in a closed container. Old milk jugs work great, as well as buckets with lids, or other utensiles. Leaving them in an open container is against the law, make sure you recycle it ASAP
