How to Insert a Drop Cap into a Microsoft Word Document

A drop cap is the large capital letter that you see in most novels at the beginning of chapters. It gives the opening a sense of flare. This functionality is available in Word. Here is how you do it.

Difficulty: Easy
Instructions

Things You'll Need:

  • Word
  • A document
  1. Step 1

    Open Word

  2. Step 2

    Load your Word document

  3. Step 3
    Highlight 1st Character
     
    Highlight 1st Character

    Highlight the first character of the first paragraph in your document. See my picture as an example.

  4. Step 4
    Format
     
    Format

    Click on "Format" on the main menu on the top.

  5. Step 5
    Drop Cap
     
    Drop Cap

    Click on "Drop Cap" on the submenu.

  6. Step 6
    Drop Cap Window
     
    Drop Cap Window

    When the "Drop Cap" window appears, select the position of the Drop Cap. In my example I have selected "Dropped".

  7. Step 7
    Ok
     
    Ok

    Click "Ok"

    Final Results
     
    Final Results

    You should now see your highlighted letter turn into a drop cap.
