We all need to save money on things and prescriptions medications are just one of many different things we need to save money on. Prescriptions can be expensive enough, whether you have insurance or not. Generic prescriptions are a great way to save money but sometimes generic medications do not work as well as name brand. There are many different things we, as individuals, can do to save money on medications.

Difficulty: Moderately Easy
Instructions

Things You'll Need:

  • Exercise
  • Home remedies
  • Vitamins
  • Over-the-counter medications
  • Free samples of medications
  • A good doctor
  • Time
  • Patience
  1. Step 1

Exercise as much and as often as you can. Exercise is a great way to stay healthy and stay in shape. By exercising and practicing regular every day lifestyle changes, you can go a long way in staying as healthy as you can and preventing health problems in the future. By staying healthy, you can avoid having to take prescription drugs in the first place. Besides exercise, other lifestyle changes include, losing weight, cutting back or quitting smoking, cutting back or quit eating greasy foods, and staying as stress free as possible.

  2. Step 2

Learn how to use home remedies to your advantage. Home remedies can often times work just as good or even better than prescription drugs and even over-the-counter medications. There are many different home remedies to choose from. Vinegar is a great home remedy used for lots of different things. Do your research on home remedies and learn how to effectively use them to your advantage.

  3. Step 3

Use vitamins regularly. Try to get in the habit of taking a multi-vitamin every day. The best time to take a vitamin is in the morning after eating breakfast. Try out different kinds of vitamins and find out which ones work best for you. Again, do your research on vitamins. Finding the right kind of vitamin that works best for you will go a long way with keeping you healthy.

  4. Step 4

Ask your doctor about free samples of the medication he or she has you on. By using free samples, you will not only save money but you will also find out if the medication is going to work well enough for you before you spend money on it. Most doctors will provide free samples if you need them. All you have to do is ask.

  5. Step 5

Try over-the-counter medications before resorting to prescriptions. If you have an illness that is easily treatable, such as a cold, an over-the-counter medication can work just as well or even better than prescriptions and are a lot cheaper than prescriptions.

  6. Step 6

Do your research. Find out if you qualify for free or really cheap medications. Ask your doctor or pharmacist if they can help you with a good prescription plan. If you qualify, you could start getting free medications or really cheap medications. Some places, like Wal-Mart, have a generic prescription plan where you can get generic prescriptions for just $4. Now that is cheap.

  7. Step 7

Shop around and compare pharmacies. One pharmacy might have cheaper versions of a medication than another pharmacy. Shopping around and finding the best pharmacy with the cheapest prescription you need will save you a lot of money. Some people are surprised to find out that some pharmacies are cheaper than others. It never hurts to shop around and do your research to find the best pharmacy and medications available to you.

Tips & Warnings
  • These are just some ways you can save money on medications. Do your research and you will be surprised at what you can do to save money.
  • If you have a serious health issue, never replace your prescription medication with home remedies unless your doctor says it is okay.

on 1/4/2009 I had not thought about shopping around. Thankfully both of my meds are $4 each at Wal-mart, but my son's are $110/month.
