keep fire ants out of your pets food dish

If your cat or dog eats outside, you may find that they are leaving food in their dish. Ants may be the reason why.

Difficulty: Moderately Easy
Instructions

Things You'll Need:

  • Sevin-10 bug poison
  • pet food dish
  1. Step 1

Carefully empty the food from the dish that the ants have taken over. Fire ants are VERY aggressive so be sure to use a stick or something of the sort to move the dish with.

  2. Step 2

Using a disposable cup, dip into the bag of poison and take out enough to put a moderate dust cover on the ground or other area where the pet eats. If you are sensitive to poisons, you can wear a pair of disposable gloves, and if necessary, a dust mask.

  3. Step 3

Put the food dish ON TOP of the dust after you make sure there are no ants in the dish. Now, you can feed your pet without worrying about the ants getting in the dish.

Tips & Warnings
  • After a few days, repeat the dusting.
  • If the ants are really numerous, you can put a dusting of the Sevin-10 around the entire area where the pet eats, but you may want to relocate the food dish to another area and spray an appropriate insecticide to eliminate the ants on a larger scale.
  • Sevin-10 dust kills ants and ticks but it does not kill fleas.
  • Check with your veterinarian before using Sevin-10 dust or ANY OTHER insecticide with puppies, kittens, sick or old dogs/cats.
  • IT IS BEST TO DUST THE PET'S FEEDING AREA AT NIGHT IF YOU HAVE CHILDREN WHO MAY HANDLE THE PET.
  • ONLY USE SEVIN-10 DUST OUTSIDE. READ ALL WARNINGS ON THE BAG.

on 10/3/2008 Thanks for the detailed information with one exception. I do not recommend this battle plan when feeding any cats of any age. Some cats lick their paws and wash their face with their paws.
