Did you know that you can do many things with ordinary shortening? Yes the kind that you bake with! Here are just a few ideas...

Difficulty: Easy
Instructions
  1. Step 1

    Remove tar from your clothes

After scraping off as much of the tar as you can from your clothing, put a small amount of shortening on the remaining spot. wait 4 hours and then wash as usual.

  2. Step 2

    Moisturize dry skin

Some hospitals use shortening to keep the patient's skin soft and moist, and you can too. When your hands or feet are feeling dry just rub in a little shortening. It's all natural and fragrance-free.

  3. Step 3

keep squirrels out of your bird feeder

Just grease the pole with a large amount of shortening and the squirrels won't be able to get a grip to climb up into the bird feeder.

** Works great and it's quite amusing.

  4. Step 4

Keep snow from sticking to the shovel

Coat the blade of your snow shovel with shortening or liquid vegetable oil. It will not only keep the snow from sticking but it will also make shoveling easier and less tiring.

  5. Step 5

**See more of my articles on uses for ordinary things in the resource section below.

on 11/7/2008 I discovered this a couple of baffles ago! The squirrel heard me laughing as he fell off and gave me a dirty look. He looked at his paws & wiped them on his fur, trying to get the grass and leaves off that stuck to them as he hit the ground.

on 8/19/2008 I love bird houses and bird feeders because it aids in "bird watching" which is a favorite pastime of mine .. and all this time I didn't realize I could keep those pesty squirrels away with a can of Crisco .. so many times I put bird seed in the feeder and those darn squirrels would eat it all up .. they would even nibble on parts of the feeder itself .. so THANK YOU for sharing ..
