Prepare for a Hurricane
Prepare for a Hurricane

A hurricane can do immense damage with its high winds and heavy rains. Even the lowest level hurricane has wind speeds of seventy-four miles per hour or more. That's why a hurricane requires careful planning. Here's how to prepare for a hurricane.

Difficulty: Moderate
Instructions
  1. Step 1

    Prepare for a hurricane early.

Begin your planning well before hurricane season starts. When hurricane season begins, materials may be in short supply. Some of the items you need to collect are wood to board up windows and a generator to supply power in the event of an outage. Generators can be in short supply when an impending hurricane is announced. Shop early and make sure you have plenty of gas for the generator.

  2. Step 2

Have a well thought out evacuation plan.

It's important to have a plan available if evacuation should be required. Have a list of hotels and their phone numbers available to call and book reservations in the event you need to leave the area. Have a plan for what you'll take in the event of an evacuation. Share this information with your family and make sure each family member knows what his and her job will be.

  3. Step 3

    Keep an emergency kit handy.

An emergency kit should be prepared well ahead of hurricane season and should be updated every year. For instructions on what to include in an emergency kit, do an internet search. Some necessary supplies include non-perishable foods, water, a first aid kit, and a flashlight with batteries.

  4. Step 4

Have a plan for your pets.

Don't forget to have a well thought out plan for your pets. Make sure the hotels you select allow pets. Have an auxiliary pet supply emergency kit containing pet foods, medications, veterinary records, and leash.

  5. Step 5

    Don't forget medications.

Don't forget to pack any essential human medications when you prepare for a hurricane. Have prescriptions refilled at the beginning of hurricane season so you'll plenty on hand.

  6. Step 6

    Stay tuned in to news.

Stay aware of any changes in the direction, intensity, or path of the hurricane. Stay tuned to recommendations about evacuating. If evacuation is recommended, don't try to ride the storm out.
