Things You'll Need:

  1. Step 1

Big employment gaps catch the hiring manager's eyes. This is sometimes unavoidable especially in a bad economy. However, many hiring managers want to hear reasonable explanation from you. Good job interview technique is to be able to expect this question before the interview and think of a believable explanation.

  2. Step 2

You don't have any references listed. It's very important to have solid references on your resume to even get an interview. Hiring managers are very careful about who they pick and good references will often tip the favor in your direction. If you don't put down any reference on the resume; write down "reference available upon request" If you forget to write it down and the hiring manager asks you, a very good / useful job interview technique is to have available references on hand.

  3. Step 3

Too many job changes? It puts you in a negative light. Although people change jobs more frequently than before, hiring managers are still reluctant to hire a person that cannot stay in the company for long. A good job interview technique is to not put down every job that you took. List the ones that are closely related to what you are seeking right now.

  4. Step 4

You were fired and couldn't explain it. This requires v

  5. Step 5

You don't have much flexibility. You have a family, kids, and other obligations. So, you need lots of time off and vacation. But the hiring manager likes to hire someone that puts work on their top priorities list. I was a reference for one of my co-workers. And while I was working, a hiring manager calls me and caught me off guard. I wasn't expecting a call and was not prepared. So, one of the questions they ask me is "is this person reliable? Do they call in sick a lot?" Right away, I knew the hiring manager is trying to weed out those that do not put work on their top priorities list. Many people knows that family is their top priority, but work is very important too. Because without work, how are you going to pay the expenses for your family? Good job interview technique is to assure the hiring manager your dependability. When asked about your dependability, give the hiring manager a strong that demonstrates this trait.

  6. Step 6

You are not prepared for the interview. Careful preparation can make you sound less nervous. Most hiring managers will score you base on how well you answer the question, so it's important to answer all aspects of the question clearly. Good job interview technique is all about preparation.

  7. Step 7

You are inconsistent in your interview. Nowadays, most hiring manager will ask similar questions over and over again to see if you are consistent in your response. Keep it honest for the best result. And being honest is important for you as well because the hiring manager can evaluate whether you are a good fit for the company. Good job interview technique requires you to be very prepared for common interview questions.

on 9/17/2008 Excellent article, and I agree with you on step 2. It's a plus to include your references on your resume, it saves steps for the employer, and they will check you out before they even call you in for the interview.
My husband owned 2 business's and we always checked references before calling applicants. You need to save time and weed through the good and the bad!

Today's economy has greatly changed, the seasoned employee is being laid off or being inflicted with a pay cut. The job market can be difficult, so one can't wait around for the perfect job, if an opportunity comes up, I say take the job, better to be employed, and if then you aren't happy look for another job. you are more valuable when you are working. 5* well written, great topic.
