Things You'll Need:
- Needle
- Floss (thread)
- Material
- Cross Stitch Pattern
- Hoop
-
Step 1
The first step is to pick a pattern that you would like to cross stitch. If you are a beginner, I suggest using one that is small and easy with no special stitches. You can do a Google search for free beginner cross stitch patterns and find tons!
-
Step 2
After picking the pattern you will then want to choose the material that you will be using. I prefer 18 count Aida material but a beginner may prefer to use the 14 or even 12 count as the squares are bigger and easier to work with.
-
Step 3
The next step is to make sure that you have all the colors of floss that will be needed to complete the project.
-
Step 4
You will then need to prepare the material and cut it to the proper size. Many people use a fabric tape around the edges to keep the material from fraying. I myself do not use the tape because it gets in my way and distracts me but it is a personal preference. The pattern should tell you how many stitches the pattern is and some even tell you the exact size. If you do not know the exact size in inches you can find all kind of cross stitch fabric calculators online to figure the size for you. Always make sure that you leave at least 1 to 2 inches on each side of the design for finishing the project.
-
Step 5
After you have the material cut to the size you need you will then want to place it in a needlework hoop. You will want to make sure that the material is pulled tight in the hoop as this makes it much easier to work with. Now it is time to start stitching!
