Things You'll Need:

  • Time
  • Determination
  • Anatomy Illustrations
  1. Step 1

Always relate your notes back to anatomy illustrations. The way to succeed in anatomy is to become a visual learner, so it is extremely important to study with pictures in front of you. The best is a three-prong approach. One picture of the superficial structures, one of the deep muscles and bone matrix, and a third illustration of a cross-section. This allows your brain to see the 3-D structure of the human body.

  2. Step 2

Knowing the relationships is the great studying method. If you are given a point anywhere in the human body, that you should be able to navigate your way to any other point by spatial relationships and landmarks. The best way to accomplish this is to describe the path of a human body part in relation to its surroundings.

  3. Step 3

Make charts to study and memorize the muscles. List the muscles in the rows on the left and then make columns on the right for Origin, Insertion, Action, and Innervation.

Study and understand the terminology. You will see that a name of a muscle or ligament will often tell of its origin, insertion, or action.

  5. Step 5

Study nerve lesion cases. Knowing the innervations, both efferent and afferent pathways, is one of the most important aspects of studying human anatomy.
