      FAMILY AND FRIENDS

      If you're new in business, start with your family and friends. While this may be awkward, keep their needs in the forefront and you don't need to worry that you're taking advantage.

      CURRENT CLIENTS

      Your current clients may be your best source of leads. If you sell multiple lines of insurance, you will want to talk with them about other policies you can help them out with.

      Also, at the end of appointments, ask if they have any referrals who might be able to use your services.

      NETWORKING

      Make sure you're doing a good job of networking when you're out and about. If you'd like to call on someone you've met, ask them if that would be okay.

      Never launch into a sales presentation in a social situation unless the person you're talking to has taken the lead (which will be rare). Contact them at a later time to keep business and social separate.

      JOIN ORGANIZATIONS

      If there are community organizations you can join, by all means do so to increase your networking opportunities. It may be a good idea, however, to check out how many insurance agents are already members to avoid wasting your time and money.

      It may be appropriate to pay for insurance leads. If you decide to do this, ask other agents what lead companies they've had luck with.

      It's a good idea to ask an established agent who is not in direct competition with you. Otherwise he or she may not be as willing to help out with information.

      If you have assistants who work with you taking calls and greeting clients, train them on how to cross-sell and ask for referrals.
