Things You'll Need:
- A talk with your teen about what they really like.
- Paint & supplies
- Careful planning for accessories
-
Step 1
BOLD COLOR ALWAYS ATTRACTS TEENSThe best way to get started is to sit down with your teen and talk about how they would like their room to look. Set some guidelines at the start, no black walls or painted bullet holes, nothing offensive...say what you feel while still giving the teen input into what the room will look like. Have some magazines to look thru or sit together at the computer and look at pics online. The objective here is to give your teen a room he/she loves while still being tasteful.

Step 2
WHO WOULDN'T BE HAPPY IN THIS ROOM?The best tool you have that will give you the biggest bang for your buck is paint. Teenagers always love bold color and if you plan it right, 2 cans of paint in contrasting color will make for a terrific room. The purple and lime green makes a real statement or shades of blue and green, or pink and purple. Help your teen to choose 2 colors that will work together, use the computer program that Home Depot has to show your teen what their room would look like with orange and pink paint. It is important to allow your son or daughter to help with the choices that are made, after all, it's their room. And if they choose something that might be outrageous, oh well, it's only paint and they will always remember that you allowed them to do it!
-
Step 3
GIVE YOUR TEEN THEIR OWN CHAIR TO LOUNGE INOnce you've got the room painted, go shopping togeather to find a new comforter or bedspread. Or go into one of the stores that sells International items and look for those paper lamps, they are useful and come in lots of different colors. Try some thrift shopping for art or furniture pieces that are needed. The one thing a teen always needs is seating in their room. Remember those papasan chairs? They can be found used all over and teenagers love them. If the cushion looks bad, wrap it in some new material or whatever fabric you have. Don't bother to sew it, staple it or use pins, you'll never see the underside.
-
Step 4
HANG PAPER POSTERS OR PICTURES WITH STRAIGHT PINSSince all teenagers like to hang pictures of their friends or posters of the idol of the day, allow some wall space just for this purpose. Yes, you may end up with a wall with a million pin holes in it, but thats what drywall compound is for. And do use straight pins for hanging pics or paper posters, they leave only a small hole that's easy to repair. Make sure the room has lots of floor pillows so your teens friends have a place to roost.
