Things You'll Need:
- The determination to buy more earth friendly.
-
Step 1
Organically grown cotton and wool is best for casual wear and can be found almost anywhere. Do not be fooled, not all cotton and wool is earth friendly. Look for organic, meaning clothing not made with material that is genetically modified and its cultivation used natural fertilizers and pesticides and traditional farming methods.
-
Step 2
Silk can be a great earth friendly choice that can be used in casual and formal attire. Silk is made from the saliva produced by the larvae of a moth. The gathering of silk does not harm the moth.
-
Step 3
Soy which is typically used for candles or eating can also be used for clothing. Such material at this time is usually only found is specially shops. It usually has a shiny finish that can add a pop to a plain pair of pants.
-
Step 4
Linen is similar to cotton but made from flax. Flax is easier to grow and more resistant to pests, using less energy and water then cotton. Linen is a light weight material that is great in warm weather and can be found at almost any clothing store.
-
Step 5
Bamboo is very easy to grow and is very renewable. It can be found in very versatile styles and looks great. However, some controversy is that is so in demand and easy to grow that farmers use land for it that should be used for other crops. While bamboo clothing was once hard to find, it can now be found in many up scale department stores and many specially shops.
-
Step 6
Hemp clothing can be bought almost any where and can be found in a variety of styles. Hemp is known as one of the greenest crops due to pest resistants and that chemicals is not needed to grow. Many farmers will grown hemp to increase the quality of the soil to get ready to grow different crops.
-
Step 7
Buying clothing with recycled material can also be earth friendly but is usually only found in specialty shops. This is commonly seen on soles of shoes from recycled tires.

on 8/19/2008 This is an absolutely wonderful article. You are very informative about each type of clothing. Oh by the way Walmart sells shirts of recycled material.... I just bought one today, they are made from recycled coke bottles. Also, freecycle and craigslist are great ways to recycle your own clothing or even instead of throwing old tattered clothing away you can make old t-shirts into quilts or I've even made old jeans into purses. There's a lot of ways to keep "trash" out of landfills. You make a lot of great points here and for everyone else just get CREATIVE! 5 stars...!!!!
