Things You'll Need:

  • Internet Access
  • A Telephone
  • The original bag for the Pedigree Complete Nutrition Small Crunchy Bites dog food
  • You may also need transportation to the store where you purchased the food to obtain a refund
  1. Step 1

Firstly, it should be noted that as of August 14, 2008, the recall only affected customers who purchased the food in California and in areas of Nevada, particularly near Las Vegas and Lake Tahoe.

  2. Step 2

Next, look at the brand and type of dog food. The dog food affected is only the Pedigree brand. The affected type of food is Pedigree Complete Nutrition Small Crunchy Bites dog food.

  3. Step 3

Next, look at the bag size. The majority of affected bags are 52-pound bags of Pedigree Complete Nutrition Small Crunchy Bites dog food sold at Costco stores in Northern California and Nevada.

  4. Step 4

Check the lot number and UPC code of the 52-pound bag of Pedigree Complete Nutrition Small Crunchy Bites dog food. The affected UPC code is 23100 05110. The lot number of the affected food is 831BFCAT02 and 830DFCAT02. There is also a "best if used by" date of 7/2009 printed on the back of the bag.

  5. Step 5

In addition about 100 bags of the potentially contaminated Pedigree dog food have been described as 20-pound bags of Pedigree Complete Nutrition Small Crunchy Bites dog food that was sold at Albertsons stores in Southern California and near Las Vegas, Nevada.

  6. Step 6

If you are unsure whether your bag of Pedigree Complete Nutrition Small Crunchy Bites dog food has been recalled, you can call Mars Petcare US, the parent company of Pedigree, for more information. Call 1-877-568-4463.
Additional information on the recalled food is also available on the company's website at www.petcare.mars.com

  7. Step 7

If you find that you have purchased one of the potentially contaminated bags, Mars Petcare US recommends, “The product should not be sold or fed to pets. Pet owners should dispose of product in a safe manner (example, a securely covered trash receptacle) and return the empty bag to the store where purchased for a full refund…In an effort to prevent the transmission of Salmonella from pets to family members and care givers, the FDA recommends that everyone follow appropriate pet food handling guidelines when feeding their pets.”

  8. Step 8

If you have purchased one of the affected bags and suspect your dog may have eaten the potentially contaminated food, monitor your dog very closely for signs of illness. Salmonella is a bacteria that invades the digestive system, resulting in vomiting, diarrhea, fever and a lack of appetite in most patients. The symptoms of Salmonella most commonly arise in dogs about 72 hours after exposure.
