How to Ferment Pruno

Pruno is an alcoholic beverage that is a popular drink in prisons. Inmates ferment virtually any type of fruit to produce pruno. As might be expected, pruno is considered contraband that can lead to serious criminal charges leveled at the inmate. Although the beverage varies in taste depending upon the type of fruit used to make it, pruno is not usually made by people who aren’t inmates as it often results in an unpleasant taste. Generally, the purpose for inmates producing pruno is solely to get intoxicated. Its name came to be known since the original recipe used fermented prunes to create the drink. Prisoners have even been known to make pruno from cake frosting, bread and fruit jelly. Does this Spark an idea?

Instructions

    • 1

Obtain some fruit. Despite attempts by the institution to curtail its use, prisoner-produced pruno has survived. Inmates usually obtain fruit for producing pruno at a prison cafeteria.

    • 2

Place the fruit in a large Ziplock bag. Squeeze the fruit into a pulp and add one pound of tap water. Run hot tap water over the bag for ten to fifteen minutes and then wrap towels around the bag. This will initiate the fermentation process. Leave the bagged mixture to sit for at least two days. Release gas from the bag on a daily basis.

    • 3

Dissolve cane sugar and then again run hot tap water over the bag for 20 to 30 minutes.

    • 4

Strain the mixture to remove large pieces of rotted fruit.

    • 5

Run hot tap water over the bag every day for about three days. During this phase, place the bag in a cool, dark place. Release gas from the bag again every day. This completes the fermentation process.

Tips & Warnings

  • Pruno is not the best alcoholic beverage in the world by any stretch of one’s imagination. Plugging your nose will help somewhat but this potent drink will test your ability to avoid vomiting. Yeah, it’s that bad. But remember that people have drunk other items that are equally disgusting such as rubbing alcohol, after-shave lotion and Nyquil.

  • If you are incarcerated, you can receive fast and swift punishment for making pruno because it is considered contraband. Don’t risk getting caught.
