How to Use Augments in Final Fantasy IV

The Nintendo DS version of Final Fantasy IV is a re-make of a classic game by Square-Enix. Not only did they update the graphics to include 3-D environments and character sprites, they also updated the character customization mechanics. One such update that they implemented is the addition of augments. An augment is something you receive at certain intervals in the game, and they can be used to add active or passive abilities to a specific character. If you need to know how to use augments in Final Fantasy IV, this article will detail the steps that you need to take.

Instructions

    • 1

Collect some augments. Most of these will be received automatically during progression of the story line. The first augment you will receive will be the “auto-potion” augment from Rosa after she has fallen ill. Talk to her twice to receive it.

    • 2

Press the “X” button to access the menu. You will need to be in the field or in a town to access the menu. If you are in combat, you will not be able to use an augment.

    • 3

Select the “inventory” option from the list. This will bring you to a list of items that you currently own. Move your menu cursor over to the “key items” section in this menu and select it. Your augments will look like key items, but they will have a little bag icon next to them. This denotes a consumable item. You will also see a short description of the ability granted by the augment when you place your cursor over it.

    • 4

Consider what ability the augment imparts upon the characters before using it. For example, if the ability that the augment grants is “counter,” it wouldn’t be very wise to put it on one of your mage types.

    • 5

Press the “A” button twice to select the augment. This will bring up a list of available characters. You may select any character from your active roster to whom to give the abilities that the augment grants.

Tips & Warnings

  • When certain characters leave your party, you will inherit augments from those characters.
