How to Customize the Grammar Checker Using Office XP

Word gives you the option to customize your grammar checker feature. It allows you to specify which rules Word applies to your documents. The grammar checker will then only apply the settings that you have indicated. This guide will show you how to customize your grammar checker.

Instructions

      Open the Word XP program. Click on the menu bar above. Click “Tools”, then “Options”. Click the “Spelling and Grammar” tab. Click the “Settings” tab. The "Grammar Settings" dialog box is displayed.

      Click the “Writing Style” drop-down list. Choose the option that you wish to change. There are two options to choose from: “Grammar only “or “Grammar and style".

      Check or uncheck the boxes for the individual grammar or style rules that you to change. At the top of your list, you have the option to apply three separate “Require” rules. You have the option to choose “Check” or “Don’t check”. For example, the first “Require” option is “Comma required before last item." You can choose in the drop-down menu to have Office always check or never check for use of a comma.

      Click the "Reset" button at the bottom of the "Grammar Settings" dialog box to have Word restore all of your default settings.
