How to Estimate the Temperature by Cricket Chirps

The constant chirping of a male cricket is a sound that easily blends into the background for many people. But if you listen carefully, you can learn something from the chirp. Dolbear's Law states that a cricket's chirp rate is dictated by the temperature. If you know the formula, you can approximate the temperature anytime you hear a cricket. Does this Spark an idea?

Instructions

    • 1

Get within earshot of a chirping cricket. If you can, put yourself in a position where you can hear just one cricket, or where you can isolate one cricket's chirping.

    • 2

Use a watch with a second hand to determine how many chirps the cricket makes in 15 seconds.

    • 3

Add 40 to the number of chirps you counted. The sum is the approximate temperature in degrees Fahrenheit.

Tips & Warnings

  • Crickets typically stop chirping when the temperature drops between 55 and 45 degrees Fahrenheit.
