1
Write a correctly formatted, edited and polished script. Write and edit your material for accuracy. Research topical issues, examine them within the script and fact-check the material several times. Create a voice within the script that defines the style and genre of the piece. Develop a script that works successfully within an easily recognizable genre. For example, write a romantic comedy or modern film-noir crime thriller. The more easily a studio or independent producer can identify the material, the easier it will be to market and then publish it.

2
Write a query letter to three to five agents, detailing the style and genre of the material, tracing its character development, summarizing its plot and offering an official outline of the script. Use the query letter as a reference point for the agent, to determine the potential for a match. Based on the clear and concise information the query offers, the agent can determine if his agency can service the material and assist in the publication process.

Find a literary agent. Obtain an industry referral or research a current union directory for an agent in your city. Contact the agent to request a general meeting. If the request is denied, offer to provide a general-representation submission by mail. Include all source materials (script, outline, synopsis, treatment), as well as a biography and writing resume. Explain that you require representation, and kindly request a meeting to determine how the agency can service the script. If you're contracted by the agent, the agency will purchase the script or make arrangements for publication. An option fee or upfront fee will be provided, in case the material is held for publication.

Join a union. Affiliate yourself with a protective, authoritative organization. Membership in a union will give you somewhere to turn during the publication process. The union can confirm the originality of the material, legitimize the author and track the publication. A union can also publish the script in a system-wide database that allows independent producers and studios to read and option the material.

Protect your work. Contact the U.S. Copyright Office to obtain an application to copyright your work. Pay the $45 fee and submit the materials for authorization. It is important to prove ownership of the work, in the event a similar idea is published. That could prevent the publication of your material.
