In order to safely climb a rock wall or outdoor structure, two people are needed. The climber is the person who will scale the rock wall, while the belayer remains on the ground to help control the rope and ensure the safety of everyone involved. The belayer is needed when ascending and rappelling a rock wall.

Difficulty: Moderately Easy
Instructions

Things You'll Need:

  • Belay rope
  • Carabiner
  • Belay device
  • Floor anchor
  • Waist harness
  1. Step 1

Locate the belay rope on the rock wall. The belay rope can be found to the right of the climbing rope. This rope is used to help secure the person who is climbing the wall. As the belayer, your job is to keep the climbing rope steady as the climber ascends and rappels off the rock wall.

  2. Step 2

Attach the belay rope to the belay device. This can be done by slipping the rope through the loop found on the belay device. Open the carabiner so you can attach it to the belay device and the rope. To close the carabiner, simply shut the hinge and it will lock into place.

  3. Step 3

Put on your waist harness. Attach the carabiner to the waist harness using the loops provided. This will secure the climbing rope to your waist so you can keep the climbing rope steady as the climber ascends and rappels the rock wall.

  4. Step 4

To give you even more control over the rope, use the floor harness. Attach the floor anchor to your waist harness using the carabiner. Open the carabiner as you did before, place the floor harness loop inside, and lock it in place.

  5. Step 5

Make sure the floor anchor loop is placed at the bottom of the carabiner. The belay device and the rope should be on top of the floor anchor loop. Check to ensure you are securely attached to the belay rope before proceeding with any climbs.

Tips & Warnings
  • As the belayer, it's your responsibility to ensure that the rope is tight and secure at all times. Concentration, physical strength and common sense are needed for this position.
  • Never rock climb without a belayer.
