How to Conceal Wide Hips

Who doesn't have a little too much of this and not enough of that on their body? Except for the nip and tuck crowd, almost no one. Large hips are an especially common problem for some women but here are a number things you can do with creative dressing to slim them down.

Instructions

    • 1

Wear clothes in the right size that fit properly. Often women with figure flaws try to cover them up with baggy, boxy clothes. While this may hide your hips, it makes all of you look bigger and often sloppy and frumpy to boot. Clothing that fits your body without clinging or hanging off of you is the way to go for every kind of shape to look its best.

Wear clothes that have clean lines around the hip area. You don't want to draw attention to the part of your body you're not happy with, so avoid detailing around the hips. Belts, pockets, pleats, and any kind of embroidery, patchwork or stitching that's visible from the top of the highs to your waist will point the eye right to your hips. Choose pants with a waistband that's a bit low, a flat front and legs that are a bit wide. This will slim down and take attention from the hips.

Wear subdued colors around your hips. Skirts and pants and the bottom of dresses will look best on you if they are in dark colors. You don't have to always choose black. Brown, navy, deep cranberry and other darks are just as slimming. If you like color, wear brights on your upper body, on shoes and jewelry. You can wear scarves if you like them but wear short scarves that don't point down close to your hips.

Dress up in A-line skirts. Don't wear patterns on skirts unless they are very dark and subdued. Skirts should fit well. Avoid skirts with flounces or layers or lines that are vertical. Choose lovely shoes and great details around your face to catch the eye.

Choose dresses for an easy solution. There are lots of great dresses that are cut wide enough at the bottom to detract attention. An empire waist is great as long as the bottom isn't fussy and overly full. A-line dresses are always a great match for this figure type as well. For formals, wear dresses that fit closely along the bodice and flare away from the waist down. Keep details at the hemline and up on the top of the bodice for the most slimming fit. Choose dresses that are dark or at least dark on the bottom.

Never wear jackets that end mid-hip. You should get longer jackets that are fitted without being tight. Remember never to let anything draw a horizontal line through your hip area. Avoid loud colors and big contrasts in color. Also avoid jackets that hang on your body like many synthetics. You can't hide your hips behind too much fabric; it really makes you just look big all the way down instead. Get jackets that fit. Coats should be a dark color and flow away from the body at the waist as well.

Know the right things to wear and you'll look terrific any time, regardless of those hips. Just be sure to do your best with hair and makeup, jewelry selection and shoes to accent the top and very bottom of your look instead of the center. Remember that the most beautiful women are those that feel beautiful, so go on out there and knock 'em dead.

Tips & Warnings

  • When you look your best, you feel your best. Keep your hair, makeup, and nails pretty to help you have the confidence all beautiful woman exude.

  • Avoid baggy or poorly fitting clingy clothes. These do not make you look slim; they honestly just make you look terrible.
