How to tie a fishing line is one of the most important aspects of fishing. A properly tied fishing line is the difference between reeling in the big catch and "the one that got away."

Difficulty: Moderate
Instructions

Things You'll Need:

  • Fishing rod
  • Fishing line
  • Hook
  1. Step 1

Moisten the line. It is imperative that you run the fishing line through water before you begin tying it. This minimizes the friction and prevent the line from weakening as a result.

  2. Step 2

Understand why you should tie the line to a swivel. Using a swivel will eliminate the strain the line receives from the twisting and turning a fish does when caught. This helps to prolong the life of your line. Pick a snap swivel so that you can easily switch between lures and hooks.

  3. Step 3

Pass the fishing line through the eye of the swivel. Bring the line back and make five turns around the line. Put the end of the fishing line in the first loop below the swivel. Pull the line tight and cut off an excess fishing line at the end of the knot.

  4. Step 4

Snap your lure or hook to the swivel. Once you’ve connected your lure or hook, tug on the lure or hook to make sure that the swivel is secure.

  5. Step 5

Tie your fishing line again each time you go fishing. Using an old, loose knot is a good way to lose a big fish. Trim off the end of your fishing line each time to ensure that a new section of your fishing line is being used for the knot.
