The hardest part of any do-it-yourself project is having to deal with all of the wires and cables that arrive with the package. Wireless home alarm systems offer the best of both worlds. You get a system that will notify you if someone breaks into your house, but you don’t have to worry about threading wires everywhere. Read more to learn how to install a wireless home alarm system.

Things You'll Need:

  1. Step 1

Find a safe place for your system’s control receiver. This should be a place that is not easily accessible to intruders or people who may already be in your home. An unscrupulous plumber, for example, could disable your receiver and then come back later.

  2. Step 2

Install the control panel in a place near the door you use most frequently. It should be in a place you can reach just after you get home. Put a couple of screws in your wall and slide the control panel over them to keep it in place.

  3. Step 3

Place the inside alarm siren in a place where burglars can’t destroy it and the sound won’t be muffled. It should be located to allow you to hear the sound from anywhere in your home.

  4. Step 4

Install sensors on your doors and windows. One half is a magnet, and the other is a transmitter. Use the adhesive strips that come with your kit to install each sensor on each door and window. When the two magnets are together, the system reads everything as okay. If someone opens a door or window without authorization, the alarm will sound.

  5. Step 5

Program your passcode into the control panel. Don’t use one that a person could easily guess. Birthdays and anniversaries are easy to remember, but they’re not very secure. Think of a milestone number that is extremely unexpected or a random number. Program the wireless elements of the alarm system, so they communicate with one another throughout your home. Each system is different with this regard, so check your installation manual for details. Usually this involves pushing a button on each sensor for activation.

  6. Step 6

Test your system. Go through sensor by sensor to make sure that each system will trigger the alarm if tripped. Check the strength of signal on each sensor. Repeat your test from time to time to make sure the system and all of its components are still working.
