There are many uses for a journal in school. Teachers have children make journals for creative writing exercises, as a way to record experiments in science, or a way to keep ideas organized when learning about a new subject.

Difficulty: Easy
Instructions

Things You'll Need:

  • Composition notebook
  • Paper tabs, gummed or sticker
  • Pencil
  • Colored pencils, optional
  1. Step 1

Purchase a composition notebook. You can find them relatively cheap at office supply or discount stores. They come in an assortment of cover colors, but are most known for the classic black-and-white marble cover.

  2. Step 2

Purchase paper index tabs. They come in different colors and styles, and can generally be found in sticker form or gummed form, so they will easily stick to your journal pages. These can also be found at office supply or discount stores.

  3. Step 3

Decide what your journal will be used for and fill in the information on the cover of the notebook. There is a space to write a title on the cover.

  4. Step 4

Figure out what sections your journal should be broken into and make a paper tab for each of those sections. Place the tabs evenly throughout the pages of the notebook to separate each section. For instance, if your journal is about plants, you might want a section on plant anatomy, a section on plant growth, and a section on plant care. If your journal is on the alphabet, create a tab for each letter of the alphabet.

  5. Step 5

Fill your journal with relevant information. You can even cut out pictures and glue them into your journal.

Tips & Warnings
  • Use pencil when writing in a paper journal. It makes it easy to erase mistakes.
  • Use colored pencil for coloring in your journal. Again, it is easier to erase mistakes.
  • Glue sticks work best when gluing in a paper journal. Liquid glue can be messy and pages can stick together.
