Donating a vehicle to a charity organization can be a source of satisfaction. You not only help someone in need, but you can also claim a deduction on your income tax return. If you have a car that you would like to donate, even if it has parking tickets, follow the procedure below.

From Quick Guide: Used Cars
Difficulty: Easy
Instructions
  1. Step 1

Sign the title over to the charity of your choice. Make sure to provide the charity with the registration form and proof of any safety or emissions tests. This way, the organization that you donate the car to doesn't have to perform the same tests needlessly.

  2. Step 2

Fill out a bill of sale, and be sure to save it for your income tax records.

  3. Step 3

Remove the license plates before leaving the car with the charity. This protects the new car owner from any parking tickets issued while the car was in your possession. The charity or new car owner can register the car under their name and obtain a new license plate number. Removing the plates also protects you, as the donor, from any future parking tickets.

  4. Step 4

Send a letter to the Division of Motor Vehicles (DMV). Inform the agency that you're no longer the vehicle's owner. Make sure to include the vehicle identification number, make, year and the license plate number. Have the new owner sign the letter.

  5. Step 5

Mail the letter to the DMV in your city. Generally, most DMVs allow you to fax it if you prefer to do so. This measure also takes accountability of any parking tickets on the car away from the new car owner.

Tips & Warnings
  • Make sure to research the organization you intend to use. Find out what they intend to do with the vehicle, and what percentage of the sale will go to the organization. This will minimize fraud, which is common in this field.
