Instructions

    • 1

Before removing the glass from your casement window, throw down a canvas tarp below the window. This will help catch glass and debris after you knock the window out of place. Put on safety gloves and glasses to prevent injury.

    • 2

Use a hammer to remove the glass from the window pane. Firmly tap the glass until it breaks. Carefully remove any jagged edges that remain. You may find dried putty around the window frame. This will have to be removed as well. If the dried putty will not come off easily, use a putty knife. Save the sash clips you find inside the window frame. These will be used to hold the new pane in place.

    • 3

Use a paint brush to wipe away any other dirt or debris from the window frame. A clean surface is necessary when replacing the window with new glass. Measure the inside of the window frame. Take these measurements to a local glass manufacturer so they will be able to cut a new piece for you.

    • 4

Place the new piece of glass inside the window frame. Use sash clips to hold it in place. To keep the window pane from falling out of the casement window, use putty and a putty knife to seal the new pane. Putty should be applied liberally around the new pane. Use the putty knife to smooth out the putty.

    • 5

Allow the putty to dry. Clean the new window pane with a dry cloth. Remove any debris or dried putty found on the glass. You may need to scrape putty off the glass using the putty knife.

Tips & Warnings

  • Always wear the proper safety equipment when replacing glass.
