Need a way to fax from your PC without a modem? It's easier than you think. It just involves using an Internet-based fax service. There are many to choose from.

Difficulty: Moderately Easy
Instructions
  1. Step 1

Take a look at the Resources section for a website that will give you a review of different online fax services. First, look at the monthly fee, and how many free faxes you can send and receive for this fee. It ranges anywhere from $8.95 to $12.95 per month.

  2. Step 2

Compare the setup fees of each service. Some are free. Others charge up to $12.95.

  3. Step 3

Next, take a look at what each service offers for their numbers. Can you get a toll-free fax number for your clients? Would you rather have a local fax number? Can you get your faxes via e-mail? What's their storage limit? What do they charge per page for going over your monthly limit? These are all very important questions you need to answer before choosing a service.

  4. Step 4

Once you have selected your service, you will need to download and install their software. Each company is different in the interface they use to upload your fax, but they all involve uploading either a document composed in Word or Excel, a PDF document, or a hard copy of a document you've scanned to create a TIFF file. There are cover letter templates to choose from as well.

  5. Step 5

After everything has been uploaded, click on the "Send" button on the software's interface (almost like having a fax machine!). You should get a confirmation message that your file was sent. There should also be a fax log for you to review.

Tips & Warnings
  • Be sure to check out the ones that have free trials, such as MyFax or eFax. You can check out each service to see what works best for you.
  • If there's a limit on storage, keep a copy of your fax on your hard drive.
  • Watch out for services that charge for fax storage. Most offer it for free.
  • Make use of the fax log. It'll show you how many pages you send and receive so you don't go over your monthly limit and get charged anywhere between $.07 to $.12 per page. That can add up!
