Whether you are buying a gift for a significant other for Valentine’s Day or shopping for an engagement ring, retail jewelry stores always have customers and the demand to buy is constant. While it seems as if it would be relatively easy to sell a product if the customers are put in front of you, it’s quite the opposite. Without the proper skills and sales pitch, you won’t go far. In order to succeed in retail jewelry sales, there are certain things an individual must do.
Things You'll Need
- Good communication skills
- Clean-cut appearance
- Knowledge of your product
- Breath mints
Know your product. The key thing to being successful in retail jewelry sales is to know the product you are selling. If you know what is available to customers, you are more likely to get a sale when you recommend a product that specifically suits your customer’s needs. Without the necessary knowledge, you’ll recommend products that are out of your customers‘ price range.
Find out what the consumer wants. Communication is crucial in sales. Make it a point to ask the customer what they are looking for and what they want to spend. Once you know what they’re looking for, it will be much easier to suggest a product.
Sell the product without pushing. A common complaint of consumers is that sales people are pushy beyond the point of rudeness. While it’s okay to let your customer know what their options are, it’s not okay to be pushy. Instead, be thoughtful about your suggestions. Keep in mind if this individual likes you and the sale is successful, it is likely that he or she will send more business your way.
Know how to compromise. In some retail stores, sales representatives are given the option to negotiate prices. Some sales people use this to their advantage while others don’t. If you are put in the situation of negotiating a price, be thoughtful and strategic. While negotiating a lower price may take a cut out of your commission, it’s better than not getting a sale at all.
Look the part. Take pride in how you present yourself to customers and always have good grooming habits. For men, a clean-cut shave, styled hair and smooth hands looks nice and will present a professional appearance. For women, manicured hands, neatly groomed hair and classy makeup look great. In addition, you always want to have fresh breath when you’re talking to customers so carry around mints in your pocket. Remember, there is a lot of money that can be made in retail jewelry sales. Good luck!
