How to Install a System Update on PlayStation 3
In order to keep your PlayStation 3 fully updated and functioning properly, it's important that you install system updates frequently. Make sure that your PlayStation 3 is functioning and is properly connected to your television.

Wait for the standard PlayStation 3 menu to display. This should take no more than 1-2 minutes. If the menu doesn't display, something in the system's setup is wrong.

Turn on your wireless controller and use it to control the PlayStation 3.

Scroll over to the "Settings" tab in the PlayStation 3 menu.

Scroll up to the top of the "Settings" tab, to the "System Update" option.

Click the X button to select "System Update."

Select the "Update via Internet" option by clicking the X button.

Wait for the System Update to download to your PlayStation 3. This may take quite a while.

Agree to the terms of the System Update to proceed.

Install the System Update to your PlayStation 3 by clicking on the "Install" option with the X button.

After you install a System Update for your PlayStation 3, the system will automatically restart to integrate the update into its software.
You should check for System Updates at least once a month to make sure that you're always up-to-date.
Do not shut down your PS3 while an update is installing. This can cause damage to your system's data and can have extremely negative consequences.
