1. Purchase an apron and a chef's hat. Professional aprons come in standard sizes and a few different styles. Chef hats can come in a variety of different heights. In the French cooking tradition, the height of a chef hat shows his status in the kitchen. Chef hats are usually adjustable, so it is likely that whichever one you find will fit you.

2. Select a chef coat as an alternative to an apron if you like that look better. Chef coats have long sleeves, and are thick and warm. If your Halloween brings chilly weather, a chef coat will keep you warm.

3. See if you can find pants to match your chef coat or apron. Uniform catalogs sell them as matching sets. Chef pants are made a lot like medical scrubs--with loose breathable fabric.

4. Be sure that your hair is tucked up under your hat when you get dressed in your costume. No one wants hair in her food. For food safety, a meat thermometer should be carried at all times, and there is usually a hook that looks like a pen holder on your apron of chef coat for holding the thermometer.

5. Consider carrying a whisk and a mixing bowl or a cookbook, as props for added effect.
