How to Get Your Skateboarding Team Sponsored
Getting a skateboarding team sponsored is about more than just great skateboarding--although that's pretty important, too. It also takes persistence, desire, determination and a little bit of luck to get a skateboarding sponsor. For some, sponsorship falls right in their laps. For everyone else, this article gives the best game plan in order to get sponsored in skateboarding.

Practice, practice, practice. To get sponsored, a skateboarder has to be on top of his game. The only way to master tricks that get you noticed is to practice. Skateboard everywhere--to work, school, friend's houses. Ride at the local skateparks, and even make road trips to skate at parks that aren't local. The more your team skates, the more likely a skateboard company will take notice.

Find and enter as many skateboarding competitions as possible. Start small, with local competitions. Then progress to larger competitions in metro areas. By winning competitions, your team name gets out. The more publicity, the better chance that a sponsoring company will find you.

Make a video. Get a friend to videotape your team skateboarding. Make it a compilation of the best moves you have. Once the tape is done, send it to skateboarding company contacts. These contacts are listed on the company websites under the "Contact Us" information; see Resources for suggested sites. Send the video to as many contacts as possible. Keep in mind that contracts with smaller companies are easier to attain than contracts with larger companies.

Keep the attitude in check. Skateboarding companies want to sponsor a skate team that is easygoing and fun to work with, not an egotistical jerk. Remember, too, that skateboarding companies have an image that they are looking for in a skater. If a skater doesn't fall into their image, they don't sponsor them. So, if you're not willing to change to fit an image, then look for sponsorships from companies whose image fits you.

Love skateboarding. When you truly love to skateboard, it shows. Finding sponsorships may be easy, or it may take a long time. Whichever it turns out to be, skateboard because you love it, and everything else will fall into place.
