How to Make My Own Fishing Pole
You don’t necessarily need loads of fancy equipment or newfangled gadgets to catch yourself a fish these days. They may help out a bunch, but what’s the fun in that, right? Years ago, that sort of stuff didn’t even exist. Fishing consisted mainly of a branch off a tree, some line and a hook. If folks were able to catch a fish then, you can bet your bottom dollar you’ll catch one now. It’s not like the fish have gotten any smarter—even though they do swim in schools. At any rate, a homemade fishing pole, or at least the crafting of one, is a pretty fantastic activity for those stormy days when you and your kids can’t get out on the water. Give them one of those “remember when” memories we’ve all considered long gone. And just think of the satisfaction they’ll feel, not only catching a fish, but hooking one on a pole of their own design.

1
Cut a bamboo pole to approximately 8 feet in length with your standard hand saw. You can often find bamboo poles at your local gardening centers, "big box" home improvement stores and some home store retailers. If you have problems finding this product in your area, there are a number of dealers online that will deliver to you for a small shipping fee.
-
2
Cut a fishing line about the same length as the bamboo pole.

-
3
Tie the line tightly to one end of the pole. If you want, drill a hole in the bamboo pole and feed the line through it before tying it off.
-
4
Fasten a hook on the other end of the line and attach a cork about 12 to 24 inches up from it. Make sure that the distance between the hook and cork is short enough to keep the bait from dragging on the bottom of the lake, river or creek you plan on fishing in.
-
5
Head off to your favorite fishing hole and begin casting.

Tips & Warnings
If you’re making fishing poles with your kids (or nieces, nephews and grandchildren), let them put their own finishing touches on these homemade rods. Lay out some newspaper in a garage or work area, open up some paint in various colors and let them decorate their new fishing poles.
Grip tape is commonly used for tennis rackets but can easily be brought into play for the handle of your homemade fishing pole. Simply head to your local sporting goods store to pick up a roll.
If you purchase your bamboo from one of the "big box" home improvement stores, most of them have a circular saw available for free service.
