Hashing is not for the faint of heart. Not only do you have to run for several miles through sometimes downright nasty terrain, you are also expected to drink a beer every so often just to keep up. And then there is the task of actually finding the trail and understanding the markers. But have no fear--read on to learn ways to hash without getting yourself in trouble.

Difficulty: Moderate
Instructions

Things You'll Need:

  • Old sneakers
  • Long pants/jogging pants
  • Dry pair of socks
  • Water
  1. Step 1

Avoid drinking too many beers at the start. Most hashers will pound down several beers before even running. Don't make that mistake, it will come back to haunt you.

  2. Step 2

Stay in the middle of the pack to start, even if you are a really fast runner. Most hares lay the worst parts of their trails near the starting spot. By staying in the middle, you can avoid running too far on false trails or on countbacks.

  3. Step 3

Think at intersections. Most hashers will simply follow the pack down a bad trail. Look around you and think about spots that the hares might have gone through that aren't as bad looking. Chances are you will find a true or better trail that way.

  4. Step 4

Keep the pack in visual sight. There is nothing worse than getting separated from the pack because you were looking for a back way to the beer. That can lead you to running a lot more than you planned.

  5. Step 5

Limit yourself to one beer at the stops. This can be tough because your body will be dehydrated.

  6. Step 6

Watch for law enforcement. Cops have been known to chase down hashers. The trick is to outrun them by always looking for escape routes.

  7. Step 7

Avoid common circle mistakes. Circle is when everyone lines up at the end to sing and finish the beers. Don't wear a hat or say something too silly.

Tips & Warnings
  • Always drink water at the end to help refuel.
  • Keep dry clothes in your car so you don't have to drive home muddy.
  • Never wear any clothing that hints of competition.
  • If you've had too much to drink, please call a cab or have someone drive you home.
