The Windows NT operating system does not come with a defrag option for its hard drive. However, there are workaround options for executing a defrag with this operating system, such as using separate defrag programs like Symantec, SpeeDefrag and Contig. Below are steps on how to successfully defrag the hard drive in Windows NT.

Difficulty: Moderate
Instructions
  1. Step 1

Perform a back up on all computer files and programs. Before doing anything to your hard drive, it is very important to back up all of your data to avoid losing it. Make sure that you have a back-up disk or CD to transfer all of the data to before beginning a hard drive defrag. Also create a system restore checkpoint to save your computer's current status before proceeding to defrag.

  2. Step 2

Download or purchase a program designed to defrag hard drives. You can download a free defrag program for Windows NT by clicking the link in Resources below and choosing from the programs listed. To purchase a defrag program, you can visit any local electronics store. Do research on the effectiveness and quality of these programs before purchasing and downloading. Make sure any freeware programs you download are legal, legitimate programs free of viruses, spyware and malware.

  3. Step 3

Download the free defrag program and follow the proceeding prompts. If you have purchased your defrag program, follow the included instructions to install it. After your program has been successfully downloaded or installed, click the option to start the defrag process. The time a defrag takes depends on how much data and programs are on your hard drive. When the defrag process has been completed, close all open programs and restart the computer.

Tips & Warnings
  • Seek help from a computer technician or your computer provider if you are unsure about performing a defrag yourself.
