Make a Deer Stand

A deer stand is considered by many to be an essential piece of hunting gear. A proper deer stand sits up in the trees above the line of sight of the deer and allows the hunter an unobstructed view of the land around him and of any deer that might come across his path. Building a deer stand is not a complicated venture, and can be completed in just a matter of hours.

Difficulty: Moderate
Instructions

Things You'll Need:

  • 1''x4'x8' section of plywood
  • Measuring tape
  • Power saw
  • Large "L" brackets
  • Ladder
  • Small folding ladder
  • Long screws
  • Battery-powered drill
  • Paint or sealant
  1. Step 1

Measure in and mark 48" from the long end of your plywood. Cut your plywood sheet at that mark, creating two square 4'x4' sections of plywood.

  2. Step 2

Coat your plywood sections with a weather-resistant paint or sealant. This will ensure that your stand does not rot and fall apart after being mounted. Screw the sections of plywood together once they are dry to create one large standing area for your deer stand.

  3. Step 3

Find an appropriate tree in your hunting area. The tree must be tall enough to allow you to mount the stand approximately 10' from the ground and large enough to support the weight of you and your tree stand without bending or breaking.

  4. Step 4

Mark a space 10' from the ground in your chosen tree to mount your deer stand. Make sure the tree has a clear view of the surrounding area and is unobstructed by any other trees or brush.

  5. Step 5

Attach your large brackets to the bottom of your tree-stand base. Be sure that you attach the brackets securely and that they are strong enough to support the weight of an average-sized adult.

  6. Step 6

Set your ladder next to the tree and climb up to mount your tree-stand base. Place the base squarely against the tree and screw it in securely. Pull on it once you have screwed it to the tree, to be sure it will hold your weight before climbing on it.

  7. Step 7

Mount your small folding ladder off to the side of your tree stand. Place it so that you can reach it to climb up onto your tree-stand base, and screw it in near the top of the ladder. Once you climb up onto your tree stand, you can pull the ladder up with you to avoid any unwanted visitors while you are hunting.

  8. Step 8

Test out your ladder and tree stand by climbing onto them. Have a friend stand by in case something happens and the stand falls or you are otherwise injured. Make sure that both the ladder and stand hold your weight and do not move or shift.

Tips & Warnings
  • Use your tree stand in a variety of weather and situations to ensure that it is safe and that you will get plenty of use out of it during hunting season.
  • Never use power tools without proper safety gear. They can be very dangerous and cause serious injury if not used with proper protection.
