How to Choose a Motherboard

Motherboards are one of the most important component of a computer. Without the motherboard, the system's components have no way of talking to one another and providing you with a computing system. Purchasing such an important piece of equipment may sound tedious, but in actuality can be quick and efficient.

Determine what you're looking for. Be specific if you're looking for a motherboard to sustain high-end CPU's, several gigabytes of ram, multiple hard drives or other options. Start with what you need for a motherboard to do.

    • 2

Determine your budget. Motherboards can start at over $100 and skyrocket from there. As you're budgeting, make sure you keep in mind what you'll be spending on additional components if you're building your entire computer.

    • 3

Decide what type of case you'll need. The type of case will determine the type of motherboard. While most motherboards are ATX design, make sure your case matches the number of expansion slots, hard drive locations and peripheral support.

    • 4

Look at multiple vendors for the best bang for your buck. Also use multiple resources to read reviews of the motherboard you have in mind (see Resources below).
