Know your tools. Determine the paper you want to use. If you are new to drawing you need to know that the tools you use make all the difference when it comes to creating your art. There are a lot of different kinds of paper that’s used with different tools. When sketching or drawing use a hot press paper with a smoother finish. This will give you a soft picture and will work well with the pencil. A great brand of paper is Stonehenge. It is perfect for many tools, especially graphite. A No. 2-B pencil is required because it offers a line that is not too hard but not too soft, either. It is perfect for drawing. A vinyl or plastic eraser works better than the traditional eraser because it diminishes most graphite pencils, even the darkest strokes.

In order to get the feel for the different body parts, you need to draw circles for every body part a pony has. For example, for the head draw a circle, draw another circle for the body, the legs, and so on. Since you are making a chubby pony, make sure you make the body extra round. Once you are finished with making the circles for each body part, go into the circles and touch them up by sketching out the actual shape of the head, the body and the rest of the body parts.

Once you have outlined the actual shape of the pony, start erasing the rest of the lines that you no longer need for a reference. The lines that you used in the beginning to make the circles can be erased as long as you are not using them anymore.

Now start making the face of the pony. Put in the eyes and the mouth. If you want more of a cartoonist pony character, give it an expression. You can also make the ears on top of the head. Place two dots on the horse’s snout. Draw the mane of the pony, along with the tail. Do this by making light lines right along where the mane and tail would be. Remember that drawing hair is different than drawing the body. You do not have to make a dark outline of the hair, just lightly make your lines and then go back and make a few darker lines throughout the mane and the tail to create the illusion of lifelike hair. You can go into your drawing and start shading once you are finished with your outline of the pony. This will create more depth and realization.
